Are K&N air filters better than a standard paper filter?

I've had a K&N filter for about 3 years, and just recently I ran into some websites that have people saying that their filters are really bad. I was just wondering if I should toss it and get a regular air filter or if I should keep it.

K&N will flow more air, this is helpful if you drive a lot with your engine at redline. (sarcasm) . The trade off is the filtering ability. Once again proving that you don't get something for nothing. The extra dirt in your engine will not do anything
